Few events can rival the intensity, drama and spectacle on offer at the world’s greatest airshow, The Air Tattoo. With over 230+ aircraft participating each year the Royal International Air Tattoo has been acknowledged as the world’s largest military airshow.
We have supplied temporary structures to RIAT for over 25 years.
Each year the brief is to supply modern and practical temporary structures to be used for various applications across the event, each one creating a welcoming environment for all visitors.
In 2013 we supplied in excess of 6,000sqm of temporary structures.
These were used for:
- Exhibitor stands
- Hospitality suites
- General admission catering areas
And for the first time on this event GL events Seating and Stadia supplied the event with three temporary grandstands consisting of 4,000 tiered seats.
The main challenges we face with this job is due to the site being an operational RAF base. It is a site where our housekeeping must be beyond reproach as Foreign Object Damage is real threat and something as simple as a tiny piece of scrap metal from our packaging could cause catastrophic damage to an aeroplane engine.
With million pound planes mixing with our forklifts, a real attention to detail is required. We therefore have to put fencing up around the site of the structures during the build; we also have to have to check the tyres of all cars when coming onto the site to ensure they are as clean as possible.
Security is very tight during the build and clear and a rigorous security system is put in place so that all trucks, vans and cars are searched thoroughly every time they enter on to site.
This has to be taken in to account on timings and we have to ensure all of our subcontractors are notified.
When it comes to the tiered seating installation there is a unique challenge: good sightlines are required for the very enthusiastic plane spotters but this has to be combined with maintaining sightlines for Air Traffic Control.
