GL events UK Group has been named the official overlay partner to the new all-electric Formula E Championship. GL events will supply all the event infrastructure in a multi-million pound contract with the FIA backed single-seater championship, which has its first race in Beijing on 13th September, with ten competition rounds taking place in major cities across the globe.
Each round will take place in the heart of the world’s leading cities – including London, Buenos Aires, Beijing and Longbeach Califonia – racing on street circuits around iconic landmarks. GL events will work with the Organisers to create a bespoke infrastructure including the integral pit structure for each location, adapting the offering to the requirements of the circuit and the city.
James Anderson, GL events’ Commercial Director, said: “This contract has been the product of hard work and dedication, working with Formula E to develop an evolving framework for each race. By working so closely, we have demonstrated our flexibility and given the Organisers’ unquestionable confidence in our ability to deliver this innovative event.”
For the inaugural season, ten teams, each with two drivers, will go head-to-head creating a unique and exciting racing series designed to appeal to a new generation of motorsport fans.
Formula E has already garnered the interest of celebrity names with one team backed by actor Leonardo DiCaprio, while Richard Branson has entered his own Virgin Racing team. The line-up of drivers includes ex-F1 racers Jaime Alguersuari and Bruno Senna to name a few.
Formula E Facilities & Track Design Manager, Oliver McCrudden: “The nature of our operation requires the highest levels of pre-planning, technical product knowledge and creative solution provision, all whilst delivering against our sustainability and innovation message. GL Events is providing invaluable support and expertise as we develop the Championship package and I look forward to working together on this exciting project.”
