GL events delighted with clients’ success at Sports Business Awards

GL events UK is proud of its collaboration with some of the biggest names in sporting events. So when two of GL events UK’s most significant clients of 2018 scooped awards at the recent Sports Business Awards, we were thrilled to have played a not insignificant role in the success of these events.

GL events UK was Temporary Event Infrastructure and Overlay Partner behind the Ryder Cup, and European Championships Glasgow 2018, respectively, both of which topped headline categories at the Sports Business Awards (SBA’s) 2019 – where the live event specialist was itself a finalist, in recognition of its quality-driven temporary event infrastructure solutions.

The 42nd Ryder Cup won Best Overseas Sports Event of the Year, while Best UK Sports Event of the Year was claimed by Glasgow City Council, which hosted the European Championships Glasgow 2018.

GL events UK delivered a groundbreaking infrastructure installation for the 42nd Ryder Cup, Paris, September 2018. Not only did the live event specialist create diverse and transformative spectator facilities, it also erected multi-storey temporary hospitality venues that were among France’s first triple-decked temporary structures. Its delivery of temporary grandstand seating was no less remarkable, including the spectacular 6,900 seat reverse-wrap grandstand above the 1st tee and 18th green which was the largest ever grandstand in the history of the Ryder Cup.

SBA’s organisers described the event as “a resounding commercial success,” achieving, “the most spectator-friendly venue ever in terms of visibility and on-site experience” for its 270,000 attendees, while Edward Kitson, Ryder Cup Match Director, commented: “What we put to the GL events UK team was no small task but, with meticulous planning, GL built some incredible structures.

The spectator village created a wonderful atmosphere for the Opening Ceremony and evening entertainment. The grandstands looked superb and the grandstand at the 1st tee and 18th green will go down in Ryder Cup history.”

GL events was official overlay partner to the inaugural, multi-sport European Championships, Glasgow, August 2018; creating and transforming indoor and outdoor venues that hosted aquatics, cycling, golf, gymnastics, rowing and triathlon competitions. Additional temporary event infrastructure brought a festival atmosphere across the city, enabling mass participation events and campaign activations.

GL events was a finalist in the Best Business Serving Sport category, with particular recognition of it’s support of The 42nd Ryder Cup, as well as its long-standing partnership with Lancashire County Cricket Club.

Organisers commented: “GL events UK has consistently delivered bespoke quality solutions for its clients, in sometimes challenging circumstances, environments and time-frames.

The team has shown agility in design, solution, and project management, creating mutually beneficial working partnerships with its clients, and demonstrating an unerring commitment to quality. They have earned the trust of clients who work with them, year after year.”

GL events UK managing director, Scott Jameson, commented: “We at GL events UK were honoured to be nominated as finalists by the SBA’s, and delighted by the recognition of two outstanding events in which we were closely involved as infrastructure partners.

“The world’s best live sporting events are the result of incredible hard work, creativity and dedication. We enjoy successful, long-standing relationships with an outstanding portfolio of events and it was fantastic to be recognised alongside some of the UK’s best sporting event talent.”
